Think carefully about the support of your friends and colleagues
when you decide to make a
career change
After
you think about it and consider all the gains and losses, you decide to make a career change, quit, go to a different industry,
or go back to school. You know this is the right decision for you, but your
friends and colleagues can't be easily convinced and support your decision. How
do you convince them to
support you?
First,
consider their concerns. Most people would rather play devil's advocate, be the
bad guy. However, your changes may also motivate their own career choices. If
their opinions are really pertinent and foresight, you might as well as sincere
advice.
Second,
listen carefully to their concerns. People close to you have the right to show
you their doubts. You have the obligation to tell them that you will take their
opinions and objections into serious consideration.
Finally,
say to them this is your own final decision, and you will bear the consequences.
