First, make sure you see your colleagues’ faces from time to time. Instead of phone calls, use videoconferencing so that you can see the other person. This helps you read their body language, creating a more natural conversation.
Second, don’t skip the small talk. When you work from home, you may try to avoid “wasting time” by keeping the conversation on work topics. But small talk is the cement that creates rapport. So before a meeting starts, ask your colleagues about recent vacations, their kids’ sports matches, or upcoming wedding plans.
These small details can build deeper relationships that are both personally gratifying and professionally beneficial.

Instead of just including the dates when you’re out and who to email in your absence, consider sharing why you’re gone. Where are you going on vacation, and why did you pick that location? What are you learning at the conference?
You can also share a resource that will speak to your audience, like an article or a new piece of research. It could be related to taking a vacation (there are lots of great stats on why time off is so important!) or something that potential clients might be interested in.
A personal — but still professional — message allows you to connect in a new way with colleagues, clients, and vendors.

If a Career Change Would Reduce Your Salary, Try Living on That Salary First
When it comes to a major career change, pay is often a sticking point. Can you afford to switch jobs if you’d be making less money? Eliminate some of the uncertainty by testing out your new salary.
Figure out what you expect to earn, and live on that for two to four months. This will give you a realistic picture of daily life in your new career. If you’d be making significantly less money, think hard about what you could cut back on — meals out, expensive groceries, or TV subscriptions, for example.
At the end of your test, revisit your budget to see how you did. And, of course, check in with your spouse, partner, or other family members to discuss the financial implications of your career change. Setting expectations for what you will, and won’t, be able to afford will leave less room for surprises.

How to Email Someone You’ve Lost Touch With
When you really need a favor from someone you haven’t talked to for a while, reaching out can be awkward. Re-break the ice by sending them an email with a clear subject line, like “Reconnecting.”
Early in the body of your email, acknowledge that some time has passed since you last spoke, and briefly update them on what you’ve been doing professionally. This will provide useful context for your request.
Then let them know what kind of help you need. You want to sound friendly and confident that your request is something they’ll want to say yes to. But give them an easy way to say no, and offer to return the favor either way: “I’m sure you’re really busy, so thanks in advance for considering it. Please let me know how I can be helpful to you, either now or in the future.”
And then stay in touch — that way it won’t be awkward the next time you want to say hello.

When Starting a New Job, Lay the Groundwork for Your Success
If you want to excel in a new job, you can’t rely on the orientations and meetings that HR sets up for you. Take control of your onboarding by cultivating connections up, down, and across the organization.
Figure out who the influencers are in relation to your role, and get to know them face-to-face. And don’t make the common mistake of assuming you know what your top goals should be and how best to communicate with your new manager.
Ask your boss questions to better understand how you will be evaluated and to identify potential early wins: “How do you prefer to give and receive feedback and be kept informed?” and “What should I accomplish in the next six months?”
Keep in mind that the goal isn’t to become a hero by tackling the biggest problem right away. Instead, go after something that can be achieved quickly and that delivers operational or financial results.

Bored at Work? Try Mixing Things Up
“Am I at the right company? Am I in the right job? Is this all there is?” We all ask these types of questions from time to time. They’re a symptom of career malaise, and one major cause is boredom — especially for mid-career professionals who have been doing the same job for years.
To conquer these doldrums, you don’t necessarily need to switch jobs. Try making small changes to your current role: Seek out an exciting and immersive project, or join an internal committee or team that will stretch you in new ways.
You could also shake up your routine by asking for a different schedule or a move to another office. Even small changes can have a big effect on your outlook. It’s also important to seek meaning in what you do.
Make an effort to meet the people who directly benefit from your work, whether they’re customers, clients, or colleagues. Seeing the impact of your job is a great motivator.

Promote yourself to attract others' attention
If someone complains to you, "I'm doing a good job. I don't need to promote myself. In fact, his job is really professional, but the problem is that few people know it. If ideas like this often pop up in your mind, ask yourself who has the most reputation in your career?
In your work, who may be regarded as an undoubted expert and who is the most prestigious expert? How do you know the work of those people? Have you read their articles or books, listened to their interviews and got to know them online? It may be that others have heard what they said or read the books they wrote.
The key is that these celebrities are famous because they show themselves, usually in a variety of ways. They share stories, examples and ideas about what they have been doing, with a wider audience, not just their friends and family. You know what they do because they show it. I bet you never thought it would make them unprofessional.
Showing off your work is not necessarily boastful. There are many very solemn and appropriate ways to let more audiences know how good you are.
Here are some tips for you to try:
1. Writing articles. Writing down your expertise and sharing it with your target readers is a powerful and professional way to let more people know about your unique talents. Submit your articles to print out publications and websites, appeal to your niche, and observe your popularity growth.
2. Public speaking. Appearing as a speaker allows you to disseminate your expertise to three different audiences -- those who attend your speech, those who are invited by sponsored organizations but can't attend, and those you speak about before and after your speech. If standing in front of a podium makes you nervous, go to an expert group. You can sit behind the desk and talk on your laptop.
3. Media interviews. Interviews with magazines, newspapers, radio, television, websites and other media can quickly spread your abilities. You can start by choosing media that will make you less stressed, such as association newsletters and community websites related to your profession.
4. Story telling. One of the secrets of effective articles, conversations and interviews is telling stories about your clients. When you describe their challenges and achievements, you will find the value of your role in helping them without boasting. You can use the same techniques in customer introductions to enhance your reputation, not arrogance.
5. Testimony. Whenever you do well for your clients, ask them to write a simple testimony describing what you do to make them happy. Then publish their words on your website, brochure or other marketing materials. Let them tell others about your value.
6. Establish a collection of personal works. Not only artists, they should capture their best works and display them in their personal collections. You can collect photos, examples, and other evidence of achievement and display them on your website, marketing toolkit, or PowerPoint presentation.
7. Create products. Packaging your work as a commodity, and potential customers can take it home to taste, gives them a convincing way to discover your true value. Products such as e-books, white papers and videos allow you to demonstrate your expertise and increase your credibility.
Choose one of these ideas to pursue and develop a plan to show what you can do for a wide audience.
If you really want to spend less energy selling yourself, let your potential customers know how good you are.

You’ve Been Asked to Do a Job Audition. Now What?
Sometimes you want a job so badly that you’d do anything to get it. But what about a “job audition,” where you work on a project to demonstrate your skills?
If the project will take you no more than two hours, it’s a fair request. (More than that is unpaid consulting.) But make sure you tell the hiring manager how long you spent on it, so they have context to compare your work with others’.
For an audition that requires a deep investment of your time, you may try to treat it as freelance work and negotiate an hourly rate. Conveying how excited you are by the opportunity can help the company agree to this approach. And keep in mind that job auditions can be a great way to learn about the company. If you don’t like the work you’re asked to do, or the way you’re asked to do it, that’s good information to have.
